Today was an on the go day. Since we had rented our snorkel gear when we were in Princeville, we had to make our way back to Hanalei Bay to drop them off. We planned several stops to see things that we wanted to see.
First stop: Lydgate Beach. I had heard about this place being a really great place for kids to snorkel since the rock wall created a waveless place to check out the fish. The boys were in a bit of a weird mood and the sky was pretty cloudy so we didn't linger too long. Ryan went out with Cai and they saw plenty of fish just walking around and looking down into the water.
Second Stop:
Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge and Lighthouse. This is located on the northern most point of the entire Hawaiian island chain. There were soooo many birds! In other seasons, you can also see a lot of marine life from the lookout, but we missed the whales and sea lions by a couple weeks. Ryan was a champ taking the boys around with their Junior Ranger papers. They learned a lot and I was really proud of both of them. Their drawings were great! They got a couple of coloring books and we decided to let them each pick a little souvenir marine animal figurine for doing such a great job.
Yes, this guy is on some kind of double decker bike. Weird.
Last stop:
Smith Family Wailua River Cruise to Fern Grotto. Since we didn't do a luau and we didn't do anything jungly, I thought this little river cruise would be just the perfect thing. The boat ride was fun for the boys as the guide talked about movies that were filmed there and then there was singing and dancing. The actual Fern Grotto was a bit of a disappointment because you can no longer hike up to the grotto due to dangerous rocks. We just walked to a platform where some songs and dances were performed before walking back. The boys still thought the wild chickens, big leaves and bamboo were fun to walk through. I found the mosquitos to be less fun.
Here is the "tree alley" which means we're almost back to Poipu!
