Huntington Beach & San Diego

Since Ryan's cousin Anna was having her reception in San Diego we decided to make a vacation out of it, which meant a stop at HB. We used the last of Laura's Skywest vouchers to fly into OC. We got the rental car and made our way to Dave and Raechel's. It was fun to see their new baby and chill like the old days, eating delicious take out (Thai Crispy Rice...yum) watching TV, and talking.

The next day we met up with Steph Blad at the park so the boys could get some of their energy out. The bad part came that afternoon at the Bunnell's when Cai woke up from his nap with quite a fever. It made my miserable morning with him make sense. He'd woken up at 5 and just screamed and whined for the longest time. There was nothing I could do to console him and I couldn't leave because Ryan had crashed out on the Bunnell's couch, leaving me carless. I thought it was just the travel/hotel situation, but clearly it was the beginning of his illness.

With a two week old baby in the house, Raechel didn't need to ask us to leave...a mom just knows. It was a sad, abrupt departure. Dezi and Jonas didn't really get what was going on. It made the visit with the Bunnells seem all too short.

We already had plans with the Blads for dinner so we went to the beach to kill some time. After doping up Caetano with Tylenol, he had a fantastic time running around. Dezi was in the water right away, but Caetano preferred the sand and ran away from the waves whenever they approached. Dinner at the Blads was yummy. The boys chilled with the Incredibles. We hoped that would avoid playtime that could spread Caetano's illness to Lucas.

Update: Upon returning to SLC, we discovered there was quite an epidemic of hand, foot, and mouth going throughout our neighborhood and church. They even had to sterilize the nurseries. Apparently, all of Cai's symptoms point to a mild case of it. I can't believe that was mild! I didn't see any sores, but the fever and misery were severe enough for me! The hypothesis that it was hand, foot, and mouth was confirmed when poor Dave Bunnell got it a few days after we left. I felt bad, but was relieved it was him, not the baby.
