Dezi's been praying every day for the Haitians and for "my mom to get Daybreak to help the Ethiopian kids get a school and clean water." You can't buy a greater lesson than that. For a kid to have that kind of perspective is priceless. If that is the only thing that comes from my efforts with the Daybreak Giving Back Committee, it will have been worth it. Of course, I do hope we can help answer his prayer for the Haitians AND the Ethiopians.
The lesson to me is that our kids watch us closely. If we talk about things we wish we had and spend our free time window shopping, they will learn that those are our priorities. If we spend our time being concerned for others and doing our part to help, they will learn in a powerful way to have love and empathy for others...and to translate those feelings into action.
